Modest Beginnings

Our History

In 1836, a certain John Moore acquired a parcel of land North of Tynwald Hill in the Isle of Man. Here he created a small woollen dye works and named the company Tynwald Mills. This would be the modest beginnings of a business that would eventually grow to become one of the largest textile manufacturers in the United Kingdom with trading partners around the world.

For the next 140 years, this enduring spirit would transform an industry and the Tynwald Mills (Moore’s Mills) would become a pioneer in social responsibility, providing above-market wages, healthcare, education, and pensions for workers and their families and investing in the broader community 100 years before the advent of corporate social responsibility.

In the late 1960’s, after a 130 years in the textile business, Tynwald made the decision to diversify its interests.  By 1975, the last of the textile interests had been sold and property investment became the primary focus.
